Thought for the Day
Hope you are all ready for Christmas time with friends and family!

May we glorify God and rejoice in him just as Mary did when she was pregnant with our Lord, Jesus Christ:
And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
Luke 1:46-55 NIV

Thought for the Day

Think about what Hope is for us Christians as we follow and bear witness to Jesus. How does this Hope affect your everydays?

Romans 8:24-25 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Thoughts from Michele Bailey

(PBC Leadership Team)

A lot of Christmas cards have the words ‘love, joy, peace, hope’ on them and I’ve been reflecting on ‘why do they say that’?
What is it about Christmas that should bring us love, joy, peace? The reason, I believe, is because Christmas is ultimately about celebrating ‘love wins! ‘

John 3:16 -a well-known and much-loved Bible verse says’ For God so loved the world, that He sent his one and only son…. And verse 17 goes on to say- ‘God sent his son into the world...to save the world through him.’

The angels celebrated at Christ’s birth because they knew Jesus was the saviour who had been promised by God to save people, to rescue this planet.

So during advent we remember and look forward to celebrating the birth of the Christ child- but that’s not the end of the story. God is still in the business of rescuing, bringing salvation to our broken, hurting world. He hasn’t given up on us, he loves us.  Father God has promised that one day Jesus will return to earth and make everything new - with no more suffering, death, injustice, poverty, war.
So my prayer is that this Christmas you, me, our communities, will know love, joy, peace, hope because we know the end of the story- and that is this -Love wins!!

Thoughts from David Colpus

(PBC Leadership Team)

In addition to reading the daily advent calendar, I would like to encourage you to read the prayer diaries produced by our mission partners or other mission organisations. I find them encouraging when you read about the work which is being done around the world to bring hope to needy people or support to persecuted Christians. Each day is one thing to pray for but it also helps us to see God at work.
Here are the links  CSWBMS, and Embrace the Middle East.

I have also been encouraged by reading J John’s recent book “Heroes of the Faith”. He tells the story of 50 Christians who have made a difference, some recent and others from almost 2000 years ago, some well-known and others who I had not heard about before.  Wendy and I are reading one a day together.  Thought for the Day
The third advent candle represents
joy. The traditional reading for the third Sunday of Advent comes from Philippians 4:4 which says: “Rejoice in the Lord always! I will say it again, rejoice!” As a result, the third Sunday of Advent was set aside as a special Sunday, often called Gaudete Sunday after the Latin word for “rejoice.”

  • Jesus brings the joy of salvation – Psalm 51:12; Isaiah 12:3; Matthew 2:9-10; Luke 1:39-45
  • Joy leads to proclamation – Luke 2:8-12, 15-18
  • Joy leads to praise
       – Luke 1:46-49, 2:20
Are you filled with joy this Christmas season? You should be! Because God is good, Christ has come, and salvation is yours for the asking. Christmas is all about joy, because joy comes from Jesus, and Christmas is all about him. Rejoice!

Thoughts from Jenny Giles

(PBC Leadership Team)

Our life group has been studying the book 'The ruthless elimination of hurry.'

Something that has particularly struck me is about the importance of spending more time in solitude listening to God and making sure external and internal noise( such as distractions in our minds) don't prevent us from hearing from God.

So my prayer for everyone at PBC for the New Year is to spend more quality time with God to help us grow spiritually and emotionally in our faith.

Let us build each other up with the gifts and fruits of the Spirit through Jesus Christ. We encourage others even when our own situations are tough as we enter into every day with a thankful heart and the presence of God. You can use the following acronym of B-U-I-L-D-U-P to be a source of reminders on how to help those around you:

            (B) - Be warm and inviting from the heart
            (U) - Use your gifts from the Holy Spirit for discernment
            (I) - Instill the word of God when the opportunity arises
            (L) - Listen carefully to what they are saying
            (D) - Demonstrate encouragement with your attitude and actions

            (U) - Understand their difficulty instead of downplaying it
            (P) - Press towards the positive

The above is from an article on What Christians Want to Know. There are plenty of other resources that you can find online and offline to help. PBC also has a Prayer Resources page and recommendations of books on the Pastor's Blog.

Advent Thoughts by Linda Davies
(PBC Leadership Team)

“Delayed gratification is a sweet lesson, whose teacher knows the best to come is not right now but yet to be”*

As we wait for Christmas we’re all in a period of delayed gratification. A period of waiting, great anticipation and expectation. We call it ‘Advent’. A time to prepare for the Lord’s coming on earth. Anticipation can lift the heart, fuel our imagination and create a longing within us. Advent is a time that is blessed with God’s promise as we wait to celebrate his birth and his returning. Advent awakens in us some of our deepest emotional memories of a child born into humanity, fully God yet fully man.

Isaiah 9:6 ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’

And,
Isaiah 41:10 ‘So do not Fear, for I am with You; do not be dismayed, for I am Your God. I Will strengthen You and Help You; I Will uphold You with My Righteous Right Hand.’

Verses which speak of God’s love for us and tell us not to be afraid and fill us with hope and peace. We always have these verses with us, but somehow, they seem to be more pronounced over the advent season as we begin to look towards Christmas. Will you allow yourself to find comfort in His promises? Will you “treasure them in your heart” over this season the way Mary did when the angel announced the coming of Jesus?

This advent, may the God of hope surround you with hopefulness and may His peace rest upon you and your household.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

God bless you.

As we
come together with our families and friends to celebrate Christmas with food and drinks, we also join together in unity as one body, to celebrate the festive season at PBC. With Carols, Nativity Productions, and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, we keep our eyes focused on our Lord, Jesus Christ. Thankfully, there are many ways to support these events: volunteering,  praying or gifting towards costs. The latter can be done at no extra cost to you. Are you shopping online this Christmas? Donate to PBC whilst you shop at smile amazon or via easyfundraising.org.uk (then click through to your chosen retailer). Are you a UK taxpayer? Thought for the Day

The Hebrew name Emmanuel means “God is with us”. We pray fervently to God that he gives us the courage to share the Good News, that we have heard and now believe in. John 1:14: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

 Thought for the Day
The second advent candle represents peace. "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

  • Jesus brings peace with God  Isaiah 53:5; Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:26-30, 76-79; Romans 5:1
  • Jesus brings peace with self – Luke 2:28-31; John 14:27; Philippians 4:6-7
  • Jesus brings peace with others – Matthew 1:20; Ephesians 2:14; Colossians 3:15
  • Jesus will bring peace on earth – Isaiah 2:4, 9:6-7, 11:6-9; Luke 2:13-14; Colossians 1:19-20
Jesus truly is the Prince of Peace, and it gets even better than that! Because the Bible tells us that Jesus will not only bring peace on earth but will bring peace to the whole universe and that he will reconcile all things to himself in heaven and on earth. We read in Colossians 1: “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” (Colossians 1:19-20). Let us remember today what we believe and pray for everlasting peace from above. Shalom!
