Purley Baptist Youth is part of Purley Baptist Church and is led by Youth Minister Mark Humm (left). We aim to provide a high standard of ministry for all young people, showing them the love of Jesus and encouraging them to follow Him.
Despite the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, we have an exciting range of online activities for young people aged 11-20+. As always, agnostics/seekers/non-Christians are especially welcome!
Activities and Groups
LIVE LOUD - Meets fortnightly on Sunday at 11am on Zoom for discussion, teaching and fun - details are sent to parents. In the weeks in between there is a teaching video.
Live Loud is for guys & girls in school years 6-8. It stands for Live Like Outrageous Uncompromising Disciples. We divide the time into different elements such as Interactive Talks, Creativity, Worship and Games, all with a common theme - what it means to follow Jesus. In other words, to 'LIVE LOUD'. In normal times it is held every Sunday morning during the 11:15 service in the youth centre at Purley United Reformed Church, just along the Brighton Road from PBC.
SA7 - Purley Baptist’s regular Sunday 7:15pm service, currently running online only.
Now called SUNDAY AT 7 or SA7 for short, SA7 is an "Owned Contemporary Worship Community" for younger people (ages 13-60+) and those longing to encounter God through preaching, worship and responding to the movement of the Holy Spirit. You can access it on Facebook or watch on Youtube here.
SCOUTS - Meet weekly on Fridays from 7:15-9:00pm on Zoom and outside in different locations when restrictions allow.
The 29th Purley Scouts (and Purley Cross Explorers) are based at Purley Baptist Church, where in normal times we meet at various times in the week. PBC sponsor our group and all the section leaders are members of PBC. We offer 101/2 to 18-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and skills for life, helping young adults to reach their full potential, get jobs, save lives and even change the world. More information here.
UNDERGROUND - Meets fortnightly on Thursdays at 7pm on Zoom for chat, talks and discussion.
Underground has a varied programme where we spend time together socially and also learn more about who Jesus is. We have a number of different sessions:
Mind the Gap is where we talk about issues in our daily lives and how these can affect us and people around us. We look at what the Bible says about some of these issues and think about what our response should be.
Stay on Track is a session where we explore a Bible passage and see what impact it can have on our lives. Before Covid-19 we also had sessions that included Movie Night, Toasties and Questions, Prayer Night and Christmas Story. We hope to resume themed sessions once the pandemic restrictions are lifted.
UNITY - Meets periodically on Zoom for support, prayer and fun together, also encouragement and mini videos via the WhatsApp group. link needed
Unity is our work with university students. Whether you are a fresher, second year, on placement or stressing over your dissertation, Unity is here to offer support. It consists of three main strands:
Gathering – An opportunity to meet up to worship, talk, pray, share, support during the term breaks.
Network – This is where you will receive regular messages of encouragement and prayer support. Also an opportunity to let the youth team and other students know what is going on for you.
Adoption – A PBC church member will commit to pray for an individual student every day.
Check out the 'Unity' Facebook group (URL?? couldn’t find it on FB) and be part of the network. Contact Mark on 020 8668 0422 for more details.
ViBE & THE BIG PICTURE – members are encouraged to join the fortnightly UNDERGROUND meeting.
Vibe is for girls in school years 9-13. It is an opportunity to learn, share and discover together what it means to follow Jesus more deeply and to ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength’. In normal times Vibe meets every Sunday during the 11.15am service in Meeting Room 1 at PBC.
The Big Picture is for boys in school years 9-13. It is an opportunity to discover ‘The Big Picture’ of what it means to follow Jesus. Using video clips, games and discussion, we look at different issues that affect young men and God’s perspective on these situations. In normal times The Big Picture group meets every Sunday during the 11.15am service in the QUBE at PBC.
The following activities are currently suspended due to the pandemic:
EMPOWERED / INFUSION / MENTORING / THE CAGE / THE QUBE
Empowered exists to see girls from school years 9-13 believing in their potential and being empowered and equipped to live this out. We used to meet every Monday from 7:30-9:00pm in the Upper Hall, with monthly group discussions, topical Bible study and social events.
Infusion is the name of our youth-work gap year scheme, which we have been running since 2003. It has been of great benefit to the ‘Infusees’, the young people and the youth ministry as a whole. For more information please click here. If you would be interested in being an Infusion Worker please contact Mark on 020 8668 0422.
Mentoring provides an opportunity for a younger Christian to be partnered with an older more experienced Christian. We hope this partnership will support and help with needs or issues that become apparent during the times together.
The Cage is for boys aged 13yrs+ and is all about football, football, football. At least it was. We used to meet every Tuesday 7.00pm-8.30pm in the sports court next to PBC but now that the site is being redeveloped – not to mention Covid-19 – we have nowhere to play the beautiful game. We hope to be back in action once things change. Watch this space for updates, meanwhile check out The Cage Facebook group.
The QUBE is a place where you can hang out and chill with your mates, shoot some pool, prove who really is the best gamer with the latest consoles, or just relax on the sofas and chat. Located at PBC just next to Purley Library, the QUBE offers something you can't get anywhere else! In normal times open every Wednesday and Friday 2.35-5.00pm during term time.
And Finally ...
We run a wide variety of activities with a diverse group of young people. All our leaders have been checked through the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS), all worship regularly at PBC and the majority are members of PBC.
We are always pleased when more people want to get involved in our work. Some roles require leadership training while others draw more on exisiting skills. If you are interested in exploring the opportunities and options available then please contact Mark Humm.
Are you a PBY old boy/girl? Relive your youth on our media archive page (coming soon - we're working on it!) where you’ll find a large, unique and occasionally embarrassing collection of video, audio, photos and personal stories dating back to 2009.
